Imamoglu a fost reținut în urma unei percheziții matinale la locuința sa, miercuri, în cadrul unor investigații ce vizează acuzații de corupție și nu numai. De asemenea, au fost reținuți și alți lideri ai opoziției, inclusiv doi primari de districte. Arestarea primarului a stârnit îngrijorări legate de democrație și a fost urmată de proteste în Istanbul și alte orașe, în ciuda unei interdicții de patru zile privind demonstrațiile.
Arestarea primarului a avut loc cu doar câteva zile înainte de a fi nominalizat drept candidat la președinție al Partidului Republican al Poporului (CHP). Imamoglu este acuzat de abuz de putere pentru obținerea de beneficii financiare și de colaborare cu Partidul Muncitorilor din Kurdistan (PKK), desemnat organizație teroristă de către Turcia.
Universitatea din Istanbul a anunţat marţi că a anulat diploma principalului rival politic al preşedintelui Erdogan, primarul Istanbulului, Ekrem Imamoglu, din cauza unor nereguli, dând o lovitură opoziţiei cu câteva zile înainte ca aceasta să îl nominalizeze drept candidat prezidenţial în următoarele alegeri. De ce e important acest aspect? Pentru că în Turcia sunt necesare studii superioare pentru a candida la prezidențiale. Mai precis, pentru orice candidatură la președinția țării este necesară o diplomă de învățământ superior.
